Title: Nine responses for Architecture Date: 02-12-2011
Description: Leading Bulgarian architect responsible for the issue of nine buildings and the city
We asked leading architects of the nine questions on the buildings, architecture, environment, laws and transition. Publish their answers in this issue. Haitov Nicholas said: "What are the tallest buildings in the city? If a city is like a choir that sings a song united, some buildings are choir singers as that of the blue, our sleeve shout hooray." According to our authors, most architects want their building to shout "hooray". I will not judge whether the interviews are published in the choir or debate. We will discuss it during the architectural discussion at the conference "Balrek" on November 8 in "Kempinski Zografski".
1. Building and the environment
The building must be contextual if it is simply an investment project which can be anywhere, it depersonalizes environment. It improves when it is in harmony with the environment, but not always "blowing up" the environment is negative. A good architect sees each project as part of the urban ensemble.
2. Market and architecture
The design is the smallest part of the budget of a building, but is responsible for 80% of project success. In architectural products actually negotiate and pay a long process, sometimes for years, following which creates architectural products. Prices for design can not be measured per square meter. The investor pays a complex product, and quality determine the price.
3. Superior architecture
Aesthetics, relevance, balance of compromises, uniqueness, innovation, sustainability - these are all elements of architectural design and depending on its purpose, they are in different proportions. In quality architecture present all these qualities, it can be added and more important qualities such as economy, workability and flexibility. It is a huge responsibility to society, because architectural construction works are permanent and people living in them and among them.
4. The unique architecture
Expensive and unique architecture are two different things. In Bulgaria, it is often assumed that expensive materials can compensate for poor design. The uniqueness is always worth the money. Good architecture can be done with both big and small budget, the architect is important to be aware of the budget from the outset.
5. IKEA architecture
These buildings are important for the city, they create urban fabric. Society and the City need access aesthetics to enhance the quality of the built environment and reach her except to elites, but also to the lower strata of society. Society and the city had no need to standardize and depersonalization of the built environment, even if at first glance, this unified model has some aesthetic qualities. Prefabricated buildings is something that still needs to rethink and reassess.
6. Market
Contracting authorities who have the experience and knowledge of the investment process, the architect involved at the outset of the case of investment intent. Architect than as a designer and his is a consultant throughout the investment process. With low cost and risks come from poor architecture. A building can enjoy short-term commercial success, but in the long run it is successful, if accepted by society.
7. Legislation
Spatial planning legislation has its problems, but they are not only reason for the lack of critical mass of quality architecture. One of them is bad practice to apply the Public Procurement Act, rather than hold architectural competitions for public contracts, where the criterion is the quality of the proposed design solution. Bulgarian regulations have always tried to excessive handling processes, with all the terms like bay windows, projections, balconies, cornice, elevation, etc.
8. Green architecture
This is the direction we should all support. Most importantly the client to live in a clean, maximum green and healthy environment and not to weigh the nature, uses resources when her green architecture concept, however, has become so broad and vague, with little effort almost every new building may be advertised as green. There is a risk it could become a major industry, supported by many standards, agencies and companies for certification.
9. 10 years back and 10 forward
Tremendous opportunities created massive bad product, but during the boom of construction Bulgarian architects can prove their abilities. Accumulated very good examples, and not so good.
If people look at the pictures 20 years ago and the situation now, we'll see how we go forward. There are things that should not be beat, but on the contrary, you should use to decide how to go from now on.
The economic crisis is an opportunity to highlight the best professionals.
Over the next 10 years the biggest challenge will be for architects and urban public spaces.
